Our Great Yarmouth

The websiteHave you got memories of Great Yarmouth?

A new website, Our Great Yarmouth, includes photographs and information from the museums collections, clips of oral history recordings from people and clips from the films made for the project.

The aim of the site is to involve as many local people as possible in the project, and the museums service, which is running the project, would like people to contribute information and photographs about their memories of Great Yarmouth sparked by the material already on the site.

The Our Town Project aims to create a Community Archive by recording peoples’ experiences of living and working in Great Yarmouth over the last 60 years by: recording oral history interviews, holding reminiscence workshops, through film and photography projects and collecting artefacts and ephemera.

The project is running over 18 months from September 2006 – March 2008 and it is based at Time and Tide museum of Great Yarmouth Life.

How You Can Help

The first phase of the project looks at how working life in Great Yarmouth has changed in the last 60 years. Have you had experience in:
• Oil and gas industry
• Fishing industry
• Seaside holiday industry

The second phase of the project looks at leisure and popular culture, including:

• Entertainment
• Hobbies
• Leisure activities

The final stage of the project involves home and family life in the local community, and how this has changed, in the following areas.

• Housing
• Family relationships
• Community

If you have memories or experiences in these three areas that you would like to share with us, then we want to hear from you.

The museums service is also looking for volunteers to join the research team, who have some spare time, are interested in local history and enjoy meeting and talking to people.
